It's My Life

2000-09-15 - I'm Immune?

It'll Never Happen To Me

More than 40% of all people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime according to the American Cancer Society. 1 in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women. Women who have a history of cancer in their family can expect their chances to be increased two-fold. Great. As I sit and wait, I wonder what kind will I get. Skin cancer, not so bad. You can have it removed. A tumor. Also not so bad. A little radiation can zap it away. Breast cancer. No biggie. Have the breast removed. I hardly have any to worry about anyways. They wouldn't be missed. Ovarian cancer. Sounds great. Have all your reproductive organs removed. You'll never have to worry about getting pregnant. But once they are gone, you have no choice. What if I change my mind and decide that I want kids after all? I would have no option to have a child of "my own". My mother would never have grandchildren. I hope that I am immune. It'll never happen to me....?
